Educational Philosophy: English/Language Arts
I want to change student perspectives on the “typical” English class. I strive that my class will be anything but typical. Students will read approved and appropriate books, and then analyze texts in a manner which should interest all students. This means reflective writing, discussions with others, and making connections to their world outside of them. My course will blend English, Social Studies, Art/Shop, Philosophy, Theatre, and other disciplines. My Language Arts course will challenge students to share and respect each other’s different perspectives. I believe that my course should include skills necessary for the 21st century: critical thinking, collaboration, technological understanding, literacy and creativity in literacy. Students will journey to find learning within. The goal of my English course is to have students submit high quality work while being engaged in the classroom. My only demand of students is to be respectful and give me only their best. I believe that our schools might have forgotten what "Language Arts" means. I believe in teaching English as an art; something that can move somebody to enact change in their personal lives. I believe that, already, my students have taught me more than I could teach them in a year.
